Chicagoans tend to be pretty cynical about government, so they aren’t buying the explanation that the cameras are intended for safety. The cameras are all about shaking down the public and the public knows it.
It’s the kind of red that’s not welcome on Valentine’s Day. Drivers fed up with those ever-present red-light cameras took their frustrations to the street Sunday in a nationwide protest.
In Chicago, a group of nearly two dozen protestors gathered at the intersection of Addison and Western, one of the busiest in the city. They called for drivers to honk their horns in protest of communities they say are using the cameras, which snap photos of drivers running red lights, to generate revenue rather than reducing crashes.
The city said the red light cameras were put in place to keep motorists safe. This group says it’s not for safety, it’s for revenue. They claim there are more red-light cameras in Chicago than anywhere else in the country. According to them, in 2008, the city made $45 million dollars off red light camera citations.
